The Gates of Florence
One might call Florence a City of Gates. Every villa, large or small, elegant or modest, has a gate, often set in a high wall. The gate marks a line between the dusty outside street and the lush green garden within.
It is a tantalizing window into a private world locked away in stone and marble and providing a cool respite from the brilliant Tuscan sun. Each gate has a story to tell.
Cy became intrigued with the gates of Florence when he studied there in the 1950’s and that fascination has continued. As he roams the city with his camera, viewing the gates in the changing light, he looks for that special moment when the gate reveals its imagined tale.
Platinum prints emphasize the contrast between the intricate metal- work of the gates and the luminous world hidden behind them.
